More Than a Month — A Movement
Every July, Disability Pride Month gives disabled people around the world a chance to celebrate who they are — not in spite of their disabilities, but including them. But why does pride matter? And why does it matter now more than ever?
Reclaiming the Narrative
For too long, disability has been framed as something to overcome, fix, or hide. Disability Pride flips that script. It says: our bodies, our minds, and our experiences are valid. We are not broken versions of non-disabled people — we are whole people with our own stories, strengths, and perspectives.
That reframing is radical. And it's necessary.
Representation Changes Everything
When disabled people see themselves reflected in art, media, and storytelling, something shifts. It signals that their lives are worth telling. That their struggles and triumphs deserve a stage. That they belong.
That's exactly why Disabled Comics exists. Comic books have always been a medium for the underdog, the outsider, the overlooked. It's time disabled characters took their rightful place — not as sidekicks or cautionary tales, but as heroes, protagonists, and complex human beings.
Pride Is Political
Disability Pride is also a political act. It pushes back against ableism — the systemic discrimination and social prejudice that devalues disabled lives. It demands accessibility, inclusion, and equity in every space: schools, workplaces, healthcare, and yes, the comic book industry.
When we celebrate Disability Pride, we're not just throwing a party. We're asserting that disabled lives have value and that the world must be built to include us.

Pride creates community. It reminds disabled people — especially those who feel isolated — that they are not alone. There is a rich, vibrant, and diverse disability community out there, full of creativity, humor, resilience, and joy.
